About Us

BACKGROUND

  • Founded in 1852 by Christian F. G. Meyer, a German immigrant who arrived in the United States five years prior, the Meyer Brothers Drug Company emerged as a prominent wholesale distributor of pharmaceuticals.  Initially established in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with Meyer himself serving as the sole salesperson traveling by horseback, the company experienced significant growth by 1865.  This expansion led to the establishment of branches in other cities and a strategic shift towards a wholesale-only model.  Recognizing the burgeoning potential of St. Louis as a major distribution hub, Meyer relocated the company's headquarters there in 1865, further solidifying its presence by acquiring the M. Matthews and Sons drug firm.  This strategically located branch, situated on the corner of Second and Locust Streets, presently encompassing part of the Gateway Arch grounds, proved instrumental in the company's continued success.  By the early 20th century, the Meyer Brothers Drug Company had ascended to the position of the leading distributor of pharmaceuticals within the United States, concurrently establishing itself as a significant exporter of these goods throughout the Western Hemisphere.

  • In July 1981, the Meyer Brothers Drug Company underwent a complete divestiture of family interest, resulting in its acquisition by Fox Meyer Health Corporation.  This change in ownership, however, did not ensure the company's longevity.  A critical inventory software upgrade attempted in 1993 proved unsuccessful, ultimately leading to the company's bankruptcy in 1996 and subsequent dissolution.
